Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival
27th April – 2nd May 2011.

The Fifth Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival will take place 27th April – 2nd May 2011. Over 50 male voice choirs from across the UK and beyond will be participating. Choirs are also coming from Russia, USA, the Netherlands, Algeria, South Africa, Estonia, the Czech Republic and possibly Poland. The choirs from Russia, Estonia, the Czech Republic and Poland are all boys choirs of the highest international standard.

Boni Pueri from the Czech Republic has specifically asked if they could extend their stay in the UK beyond the Festival dates. The choir is available for concerts from Monday 2nd May. The choir could stay in the UK for at least a further 8-10 days on tour. They would need accommodation, meals and the cost of their transport covered (i.e. their own coach). The choir is 50 strong with five supervising adults. The choir could be hosted, accommodated in hostel or similar type accommodation.

If any choir or organisation is interested in hosting this choir or organising a “sub tour” of two or more concert dates within the UK (or any of the other choirs coming, full details of which will shortly be appearing on www.cimvcf.org.uk) please contact Peter Davies, Festival Director, Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival on 01778 347381 or peter.davies @ abcd.org.uk.

Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival
Composers’ Competition

This email has been sent to all choral music publishers, music academies, conservatoires and professional choral music support organisations.

Dear Friend in Music,

Firstly I apologise if this email has arrived in your inbox and it needs to be in someone else’s! Could you please forward it to the person within your organisation responsible for composers / students of composition.

The Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival has launched its biennial Composers’ Competition. For several years, the competition has only been open to composers in Cornwall. For the first time, it is now open to anyone living and resident in the UK. The closing date for the competition is 25th June 2010 and the adjudicator is Jeffrey Wynn Davies. Details and application forms for the competition, the prize for which is £1000 are available and downloadable from the Festival’s web site: www.cimvcf.org.uk. The composition needs to be for no more than three minutes and scored for TTBB (adult or teenage male choir). I have deliberately not attached anything to this email so that virus checkers do not impede its progress!

Could I please ask you to bring details of the competition to the attention of composers with whom you are in contact, students within your institution or please include editorial in your next edition / newsletter / website.

The Festival is dedicated to the support of male voice choirs nationwide and, every two years, brings together nearly 60 male voice choirs from across the UK and the rest of the world in a six day Festival (27 April – 2nd May 2011).

Further information is available from me on 01778 347381.

Thank you for your attention.

Peter

Gothic Symphony by Havergal Brian

A performance of Havergal Brian’s vast Gothic symphony is being organised in Australia. This will be the fifth performance of the work (written 1919-27), and its premiere outside the UK.

The Gothic is scored for a huge orchestra (around 180 musicians) and what is modestly called a 'double chorus' (and four soloists, a children's chorus and four off stage brass and timpani bands). In practice, the writing demands four adult symphony choruses

The Gothic is in two parts: the first of which is for orchestra alone, the second is a setting of the Te Deum and runs an hour or so. More details: www.havergalbrian.org/sym1.htm.

The performance is being mounted in Brisbane, Queensland, on 22 December 2010, John Curro conducting an orchestra of his alumni (www.qyo.org.au/conductors.htm).

The organisers would very much welcome the presence of one or more British choirs in the performance. Depending on size, they would contribute to one or more of the four choruses.

They have authorised me, as a committee member of the Havergal Brian Society, to conduct initial discussions with UK choirs who are interested in participating.

I appreciate the notice is relatively short but, if a British choir is able and willing to join the performance, I can assure them that it will be the choral concert of a lifetime!

CYM (Centre for Young Musicians) Music Library

The origins of this very rich but grossly underused resource, go back to the early days of the London County Council. It is now owned by Trinity College of Music in Greenwich and administered by two part-time volunteers. The librarian, Tony Lynes, aims to make its very large collection of choral music available to singers, young and old, all over the country. There is a small hire charge - £12 per month plus postage for a set of scores of a major choral work. The choral music catalogue runs to 65 pages, comprising
some 1,800 works covering most of the traditional choral repertoire (a copy can be supplied for £2). In many cases, orchestral parts are also available.

To view the catalogues visit www.tcm.ac.uk then click on Study, College Facilities, Jerwood Library, Collections and Resources, and Special Collections. The vocal catalogue is divided into a number of sections.

The library's future is uncertain, as Trinity College has decided it can no longer justify the expense of housing a national lending library. Efforts are being made to raise enough money to enable a charitable company to take it over. Suggestions regarding fund-raising or future location will be gratefully received.

For further information or to hire copies, telephone the Librarian on Tuesday afternoons and Fridays on 020 8305 3952, or at home on 020 7733 7235; email tony.lynes@googlemail.com

For more information, please visit: www.kamerkoorcantate.nl

The choir would be interested in visiting Canterbury, London, Cambridge and Oxford in 2010 and is looking for conductors and choirs who might be interested in organizing shared concerts with Cantate.

Please contact me at the address below.
