Repertoire for the smaller choral society was a popular session led by David Lawrence at Convention 2004, for which David produced a 16-page handout. Read on!

abcd Convention 2004

Repertoire for the
Smaller Choral
Society

Compiled by
David Lawrence

Acknowledgements:
I am indebted to Stephen Yarrow of Forwoods Music
(0800 072 0354) for his painstaking validation of publishing houses, and also to Val Withams of Choral Connections for her assistance in producing this handout.

Notes: This handout is designed to accompany the repertoire session at the abcd Exeter Convention, but may well stand alone as a resource for conductors of smaller choral societies when investigating repertoire for programmes. It contains details of, excluding the cantatas of Bach, over 170 works from Monteverdi to the present day. Care has been taken to exclude works accompanied by either full orchestra or forces which a smaller choral society would inevitably find difficulty in balancing with.

Orchestrations are notated in the following way:
flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon / horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba / percussion / strings

Most abbreviations are obvious and will go without comment, however, the following may be less so:

T timpani
P percussion
nP n percussionists required
\ without (thus str\va means strings without violas)
c continuo
(x) x is optional
ch children’s choir
yc youth choir

There will undoubtedly be many pieces which ought to have appeared in this list but have not done so, and whilst I have made every effort to check the information herein, it cannot be guaranteed. For these omissions and errors I apologise, and would encourage you to check salient details with the publishers.

Happy programming!
