At the 2015 Convention in Manchester we ran a discussion panel on technology and the choral director. This page is a follow-up with links to various sources of further information.

Wireless Speakers

Using Bluetooth it is possible to connect mobile devices such as SmartPhones and Tablets to small but powerful speakers that can boost the sound level to something more suitable for the large rooms choral directors may find themselves in, without the need for bothersome cables. The wireless range is typically up to 10 metres (about 30 feet) but will be affected by any obstructing objects. Just about every mobile device will support this and there are lots of Bluetooth speakers to choose from. The particular model demonstrated in the session can be found here.

iGrand

One of many such apps but probably the best piano type application for the iPad. Full details can be found here.

ForScore

Details of the score reading app "ForScore" can be found here.

The Chorus App from Carus

Taking the digital score to a more interactive level. More details here.

PitchLab

PitchLab is a powerful multivoice tuner with many inexpensive 'plugins' that add features. We have used it to show live pitch information when working on tuning since it is capable of analysing entire chords. It is available for both Android (see here) and iOS (see here).

LoveChoir

This is a great app from Naxos for people new to choral singing. See full details here.

abcd will be following up on suggestions made at this session in the coming months and we hope there will be a technology strand in the 2016 Convention building on this.
