Choral Scholars

London & South East

Organisation: St Mary's Cadogan St

St Mary’s Church, Cadogan Street, London SW3 is seeking to appoint a number of Choral Scholars (Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass) to support the current voluntary choir who sing each week at the 11.30 Solemn Mass.

The introduction of choral scholarships is a new initiative at St Mary’s. It is expected that the Choral Scholars will work alongside the Director of Music to provide appropriate choral support for the rehearsals and services each Sunday and at other special events when appropriate. While there are no specific restrictions on age or employment status, it is envisaged that the Choral Scholarships will best suit current university students or recent graduates. As a result, the commitments of the Choral Scholars can be tailored to fit in with University terms and vacations. Choral Scholars will be expected to attend the 11.30 Mass each Sunday, along with the rehearsal beforehand at 10.30. They will not be expected to attend the Thursday rehearsals, nor will they be required to sing during August. There may also be opportunities for Choral Scholars to sing at weddings and other services in the Church, for which an extra fee is payable. Exact details will be discussed with shortlisted candidates at interview.

Person Specification
The ideal candidate is likely to be:
  • A confident singer, capable of holding a part of polyphony on their own
  • An excellent sight-reader
  • An experienced choral singer with an interest in renaissance polyphony
  • A reliable, amiable and enthusiastic person, committed to working with the other singers of varying ability and supporting the Director of Music
Typical Weekly Commitment
  • 10.30 – 11.20 rehearsal each Sunday morning, followed by:
  • 11.30 – 12.40 service
Remuneration
Scholars are paid an annual honorarium in the region of £500 (pro rata) plus generous extra fees for weddings/funerals as available through the year. The scholarship will run to December 31st 2017, though this will hopefully be renewable (by mutual agreement) until July 31st 2018.

To apply please send a CV, covering letter and contact details of two referees to the Director of Music by email to directorofmusic@smlmc.org.uk. The closing date for applications is 3pm on Thursday 5th January 2017. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to sing with the choir at the 11.30 Mass on either Sunday 8 January or Sunday 15 January, and to attend an interview and audition with the Director of Music on the same day. Please state within your application if you are unable to make either of these dates. Successful candidates will commence their duties as soon as possible after appointments are made, and ideally by Sunday 5 February 2017 at the latest.
