Musical Director

London & South East

Organisation: The Folkestone Mission Gospel Choir

The Mission Gospel Choir is based in Sandgate, near Folkestone in Kent and is looking for a new Musical Director.

The choir was started about 11 years ago and grew into a popular community choir with approximately 60 regular members singing soprano, alto, tenor and bass.  We held regular concerts where we raised money for local charities and the community. We also sang at weddings, funerals and other events on request. We sing gospel music and some secular songs too.

We meet every Tuesday in the Reading Room, above the Old Fire Station in High Street, Sandgate.
In 2014 the choir were runners up at the ‘Top Choir in Kent’ competition held at King’s College Canterbury.
In 2015, the founding Musical Director moved on and for the past year the choir have operated under a different MD, who must now move on too.  Choir numbers have reduced largely due to the change of original MD with many choosing to join his other choirs.  Those people who have stayed with the choir and those who have joined this year are very committed and want to continue singing mainly gospel. We have listened to our members and put things in place in order to grow and aspire to the choir we once were. We have full support from our existing committee and choir members now for this to happen.

What we are looking for in a new musical director
Someone who is friendly, welcoming and tolerant of a little humour whilst ensuring we do pay attention and learn. Select, arrange and teach us new music to extend our repertoire and keep us vibrant. Someone who encourages all the different harmony parts to ensure they give their best and are not drowned out by others and also encourages those brave enough to take on solo or small group parts. Has their own keyboard, backing tracks, etc. and encourages questions and then answers in a way that everyone understands
Someone who does not require people to audition to join the choir.

Audition Process
Come and hear us sing. We will then give you a list of all the music we have learned. We will ask you to arrange a new piece of music you think would suit the choir and then return at an agreed date to teach the choir your pre-arranged music. You will have a 2 hour slot to do this.

The choir and committee will then make a decision within one week and will contact you to inform you of it.  If you are successful, a mutually agreed date will be arranged to start as our new musical director. Terms and conditions will also be mutually agreed.
