Musical Director

South West

Organisation: Torbay Singers

After 14 joyful years as the musical director/conductor of Torbay Singers, Tina Guthrie will be standing down after the 2018/2019 season. We are therefore looking for a new Musical Director to start in September 2019..

The Torbay Singers is an auditioned chamber choir of up to 50 singers. The choir was founded in 1967 and has just completed its 50th anniversary season.

The choir performs three concerts a year, and in recent years we have had a workshop in January focusing on our major work for the March concert. We perform in a variety of venues around Torquay and surrounding area, including Buckfast Abbey, and most frequently at St Matthias church in Torquay.

We rehearse at Shiphay Academy in Torquay on Wednesday evenings, from 7.30 – 9.30pm, during school term times, (not including half term) Rehearsals are supported by a piano accompanist.

The choir repertoire includes standard choral works, including performances of Will Todd’s Mass in Blue, Bach Mass in B minor, Mozart Mass in C Minor, Rutter’s Gloria, Monteverdi Vespers (1610), Bach Christmas Oratorio, and modern choral classics by Lauridsen, Whitacre, Pärt and Tavener. Soloists of national and international renown have sung with the choir, and at least one concert per year will include an orchestra.

Choir members are re-auditioned every 3 years thereby ensuring a consistently high standard, and to give the Musical Director the opportunity to discuss individual performance, and areas for development.

The Musical Director is supported by a committee of 7 members, whose role includes the organisation of concert venues, publicity, ticket sales, and finances. Torbay Singers is a registered charity. The Musical Director attends all committee meetings and is an integral part of decision making.

Rates of pay are in line with those published by Making Music.
