The Swift Singers Ladies Choir, (S.S.A.A) in South Woodham Ferrers, Essex seek a new Musical Director from January 2020. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the Swift Singers into their 31st year following the retirement of their current Musical Director, Clive Smith at the end of 2019.

The Swift Singers is anon-auditioning 80 strong, fun loving community choir who perform a dynamic repertoire to delight our audiences and raise money for charity. We are looking for an inspiring, energetic, supportive, fun-loving, fully qualified MD, preferably with keyboard skills although an accompanist is available for most rehearsals and all concerts.

The successful candidate will be able to commit to approximately 100 hours per year on a self-employed basis.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Liaison with the committee to run the choir and enable them to perform at events throughout the year. This includes attending 8-10 committee meetings per year usually on Wednesday or Thursday evenings.
  2. Additional liaison with members of the committee and choir, generally by phone or email, especially with the chair, librarian, publicity officer and concert secretary as required.
  3. To select/plan and if necessary arrange appropriate music for the choir.
  4. Managing all choir rehearsals held on Tuesday evenings from 8.15 - 9.45pm, developing and inspiring the choir with a mix of songs from warm ups and simple arrangements to more complex pieces.
  5. Teaching new pieces in a supportive way, to both sight and non-sight readers, culminating in the ability of the choir to perform at concerts without music copies.
  6. Supporting the choir's choral technique and development, including intonation, balance, diction, breath control etc.
  7. Being available to travel with the choir to concerts and competitions, including occasional overnight and overseas travel.

Interview and Rehearsal:

Short-listed applicants will be invited to a short interview on a Tuesday evening, likely to be early in November. Following the interview, you will be asked to conduct the choir in rehearsal with items from the current repertoire.
