The Great Yorkshire Chorus is a large non-auditioned choir for adults based in Saltaire, West Yorkshire. The choir sings mainly pop, folk and world music and has a strong ethos of creativity, excellence and fun. Founded only in September 2018, the choir has quickly grown to over 100 members and has already undertaken many performances including BBC Music Day, TEDx Bradford and a number of charity and community events. The choir is currently working towards a large Christmas concert in St Georges Hall, Bradford. Our founder and director will be taking maternity leave from choir rehearsals between March and July 2020. We are seeking to appoint a Guest Director to work with the choir during this period. 

Our ideal candidate is an excellent musician with good previous experience leading this type of choir. They must be someone who will value and maintain the positive and inclusive culture of the choir, as well as seeking to attain high musical standards.

The role will include the following:
  • Lead choir rehearsals in Saltaire on Tuesday evenings during term time, 7.45pm - 9.30pm
  • Teach music by ear to the choir, using lyric sheets (not sheet music)
  • Set up and pack up rehearsal PA equipment (if you have your own this is useful, but not essential)
  • Responsibility for basic admin at rehearsals (eg attendance registers), with the assistance of volunteers from the choir
  • Prepare the choir well for all forthcoming performances
  • Direct the choir in performances (usually about one per month, dates to be discussed)
The ideal candidate will:
  • Be an experienced choir director with a positive personality
  • Have sufficient keyboard skills to teach and provide basic accompaniment in rehearsals
  • Have the confidence and presence to engage well with a large group of singers
  • Be able to offer expertise that will continue to challenge and develop the choir in this period
