Organist and Assistant Director of Music

London & South East

Organisation: St Thomas of Canterbury, Brentwood

St Thomas' is the Parish Church of Brentwood, a vibrant Essex town situated on the new Elizabeth Line with easy access into central London. Music at the church is highly regarded by the congregation and throughout the Chelmsford Diocese and features four choirs, an organ and new choral scholarship scheme, the church orchestra, and a lunchtime concert series. The Organist and Assistant Director of Music will be expected to play the organ to a high standard for services, including accompanying the choir as required in services and rehearsals. There is some flexibility to allow the Organist and Assistant Director of Music conducting responsibilities either in unaccompanied music, or in lieu of the Director of Music. The organ is an impressive 3-manual instrument recently renovated by Nicholson & Co. Rehearsing regularly on Wednesday evenings, a combination of the choirs sings Mass and Evensong every Sunday.

In cooperation with the Director of Music, St Thomas' Music Foundation, and the vicar there is a lot of support for the music department. The successful applicant will have the unique opportunity to assist in the recovery from COVID and make their mark on an already flourishing musical tradition at St Thomas'.

Start date: 1st January 2021. Salaries in the region of: £7,000-£8,000 depending on the agreed roles and experience.
