Conductor - CBSO SO Vocal

Midlands

Organisation: City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra

The CBSO is seeking to appoint an inspirational choral leader, to lead SO Vocal, our thriving open-access community choir in its next chapter when current conductor Ula Weber steps down in July 2022. The successful candidate will have experience of, and a passion for, working with amateur musicians of all standards and proven ability to engage and inspire people who may not be used to the discipline of a choir setting.

SO Vocal offers participants an opportunity for both personal and artistic development, through high-quality weekly singing workshops. It helps foster vocal skills, inspire confidence and aspiration through public performance, broaden musical appreciation and understanding and increase engagement with Birmingham residents.

SO Vocal learns and performs a broad range of repertoire, both independently and with the CBSO. Recent performances have included favourites such as Hushabye Mountain, Let the River Run and Baba Yetu. As well as Stella Maris, a commission by Stef Connor, Penelope Thwaites' Cold Winter's Night, orchestrated for performance with the CBSO and African Sanctus, a collaboration with Ex Cathedra, Keneish Dance and CBSO at Symphony Hall.

The successful candidate will need to sustain the choir's reputation, contribute to the musical development of the ensemble, introduce new repertoire at an appropriate pace, while maintaining a sense of fun and enjoyment for the members.
