Musical Director

South West

Organisation: Somerset Choral Society

The Somerset Choral Society, an amateur SATB choir of approximately 60 singers, needs a new Musical Director from January 2020.

The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings in the Autumn and Spring terms at Sidcot School, Winscombe, North Somerset, leading up to two concerts performed currently in local churches. We are a friendly choir and enjoy the experience of making music together both in rehearsals and performances. Recent concerts have included Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony, Mozart Requiem, Haydn Paukenmesse, Rutter Magnificat and Sprig of Thyme, Mendelssohn Elijah, Chilcott On Christmas Night and Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs. The choir has been in existence for 30 years and has benefitted from the skills and leadership of four excellent Musical Directors. We are now looking for an inspirational person to lead us forward.

The MD, who has the benefit of a rehearsal accompanist, plans and conducts rehearsals, develops the choir's choral skills, conducts our concerts and plans the repertoire.

Members of the choir are not auditioned but a good degree of musicality and some sight reading skills are expected and necessary for the repertoire we undertake.

The MD works in collaboration with the committee, attends 2 or 3 committee meetings per year as an ex-officio member and prepares a report for the Annual General Meeting.

The post is remunerated and is paid per session and per concert.

Further details about the choir are available on our website www.somersetsingers.co.uk.
Applications close on 30th August 2019.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview and to meet the choir to conduct a half hour section of a rehearsal on either 18th or 25th September 2019.

Prospective candidates, who will be expected to provide evidence of a sound musical background, experience and skills, are welcome to contact our Chairman Jane Chubb on 07814 460703 for further information. The successful candidate will be subject to a DBS check. Please e-mail your CV, a letter of application and the names and contact details of two referees to our Secretary Ginny Waters:
